On May 13, 2008, Senator Leibell and his colleagues in the New York State Senate passed legislation to establish a fixed real property school tax rate for seniors who are eligible for the enhanced STAR exemption.
"One of the greatest issues of concern to my constituents is the constant increasing of their property taxes," said Senator Leibell. "Seniors who have lived in their homes and communities for many generations are now being forced to leave. This is a terrible reality that must stop."
Leibell continued, "As a co-sponsor of this bill, I implore the Assembly and Governor to take action now and help our seniors who have given so much to our communities."
Under Senate Bill 3533, homeowners aged seventy or older who meet the eligibility requirements for the enhanced STAR exemption would be eligible to apply annually for the fixed real property school tax rate at local option. The State would reimburse school districts for lost revenue caused by freezing the tax rates for seniors.
The bill has now been sent to the Assembly.
